I'm passionate about photography. So when, at the age of 34, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I documented my journey in a series of self-portraits. It helped me literally gain perspective & to see things in a new light.

I now run the Reaissance Photography Competition, and this is my diary of the run-up to the 2010 competition. The idea struck me when I was ill - what better way to raise money for the Lavender trust (the charity that helps younger women like me through breast cancer) than a photography competition? Photography just seemed the perfect medium for celebrating all those moments that matter in life. So in 2007, The Renaissance Photography competition was born!

Now in its third year, Renaissance has blossomed into an international competition, open to professional and serious amateur photographers. It attracted entries from 139 countries last year! It gave hundreds of photographers the chance to have their work seen by our judges - photography Titans like Martin Parr and Eamonn McCabe - not to mention the chance to rub shoulders with the celebs at our Gallery exhibition parties - and we do throw a good party, if I say so myself (see on youtube!)

But best of all, in its first two years, Renaissance raised £65,000 with every penny going to the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care to support younger women with breast cancer. In 2010 we hope to do even better.

Its a real labour of love for me (I do have a regular full-time job after all!) but I am really proud of Renaissance.
